Follow this complete process to verify your site, submit your sitemap, and start tracking your Google search performance.

Create / Sign in to Google Account

Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in with the Google account you want to use for your website.

Tip Use the same Google account linked to Google Analytics for easier integration later.

Add a Property (Your Website)

Click Add Property. Choose Domain property type for full coverage (covers http, https, www, non-www). Enter your domain without http/https, e.g. yourdomain.com.

Verify Ownership

Google needs to confirm you own the site. Choose the method that works for you:

DNS Record

1. Copy the TXT record Google gives you

2. Go to your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.)

3. Add a new TXT record to your DNS settings

4. Click Verify in GSC (may take up to 48h to propagate)

Best for Domain Property
HTML File Upload

1. Download the HTML verification file

2. Upload it to the root of your website (public folder)

3. Confirm it's accessible at yourdomain.com/google*.html

4. Click Verify in GSC

HTML Meta Tag

1. Copy the meta tag from GSC

2. Paste it inside your <head> tag

3. Deploy your site

4. Click Verify in GSC

Google Analytics

1. Must already have GA4 installed

2. Use the same Google account

3. Select Google Analytics as the method

Submit Your Sitemap

Once verified, go to Sitemaps in the left sidebar. Enter your sitemap URL (usually sitemap.xml) and click Submit.

https://yourdomain.com/wp-sitemap.xml (WordPress)

Request Indexing for Key Pages

Use the URL Inspection Tool (search bar at the top) to check any URL. If it's not indexed, click Request Indexing to speed up crawling.

Note Indexing can take anywhere from a few hours to several weeks. Priority pages (homepage, key product/service pages) first.

Monitor Performance Reports

After 3–7 days, data starts appearing in the Performance report. Key metrics to track:

Total Clicks
How many users clicked your result
Total Impressions
How many times your site appeared in search
Average CTR
Click-through rate β€” aim for 3–5%+
Average Position
Your average ranking β€” lower = better

Fix Issues in Coverage Report

Go to Pages (previously Coverage) report to see errors, warnings, and valid pages. Common issues to fix:

  • Error Submitted URL returns 404 β€” update your sitemap
  • Error Page with redirect β€” fix to 200 status
  • Warning Indexed, not submitted in sitemap β€” add to sitemap
  • Info Duplicate page β€” add canonical tags
  • Warning Crawled, not indexed β€” improve content quality
